PC Backup User Guide

At the end of the installation process the program should start automatically.

PC Backup

If not to start using the program, click on the desktop icon or go to Start > Programs > PC Backup

PC Backup connect to server

The software is connecting to our backup server.

Firewall settings:

During the use of the PC Backup service, you may be prompted by your firewall to allow the following files to be used with the PC Backup service. All the following files need to be allowed through your firewall:

AuaAcb.exe (auto-update agent A-Click backup process)
AuaAcbJW.exe (auto-update agent A-Click backup Java Window)
bJW.exe (backup Java Window)
bsch.exe (backup schedule)
bschJW.exe (backup schedule Java Window)
btray.exe (backup system tray)

An example of a firewall prompt is below.

User Logon:

Insert your PC Backup Login Name and Password. The Login Name is in uppercase. The Password is what you have chosen when ordering the service and is case sensitive. The PC Backup Login Name and Password are available in your welcome email.

PC Backup user login

If you click the Save password box, the software will remember your password. Click OK.

Encryption: You can keep your login Password the same as your data encryption password. If you ever change your login password, by default, the encryption password is always the very first password you had for the PC Backup service. Warning: Using a different Encrypting Key to your Login Password, means that we will not be able to help you retrieve your password, when you need to restore files. We recommend you use the Default option.

New Backup set Wizard:

When you logon for the first time a simple Wizard helps you to get starting using the software.

A simple tick in the checkbox is all that is required to select your Desktop, My Documents or Favourites folders to be selected to be backed up. A simple tick in the checkbox is all that is required to backup your Outlook or Outlook Express .pst (Personal Folder Storage) data files.

PC Backup wizard

The cancel button does not work as you need to select the files you want to backup. The Advanced button enables you to select other files to be backed up.

Please Note: This is aimed at businesses that are not using Microsoft Exchange Server. If you are using Outlook without Microsoft Exchange Server, Outlook stores all of its data in the .pst file. This includes email messages, contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, and journal entries. Outlook Express stores all of its email messages in the .pst file.

Companies using Microsoft Exchange Server should backup this server with appropriate Server Backup software. This software is for backing up PC's and Laptops and not for server backups.

By click the Advanced button, you can select other folders and files that you want to backup. You may store other files that you would like to backup outside your My Documents folder

Schedule: The wizard then asks when you would like to Schedule Backups. You can either select specific days of the week and a specific time, or you can choose not to use the schedule, and you will still be automatically prompted to backup your data, when you log-off or shut-down your computer. This is ideal as you can quickly backup files that have changed at the end of your working day, and the software securely locks your PC, whilst the backup completes.

Backup & Restore

Backup:

When you have completed the New Backup Set Wizard, you will see the following screen. To backup the files you have selected during the wizard, you simply click the Backup button. This then transfers the selected files to our backup storage servers.

Please note: If you select a lot of files to backup, you should run your very first backup at the end of the day, when you have completed your work. You will need to leave the backup to run overnight. Files can only be sent (uploaded) at the upload speed of your broadband service, which is slower than your download speed. If your broadband service has a capped usage, you may use your usage allowance when backing up a lot of files.

After the initial backup, the software simply backs up any changes to files or new files that have been saved in the folders you have selected to backup.

PC Backup

Click the Backup button. When you click the Backup button your files will transfer to our PC Backup Server.

Backup progress

Please note that the Time Left is an estimate only calculation based on the amount of data transmitted during your backup. It is more accurate once some files have been uploaded. The transfer rate is an estimate only and is measured in kbits/s, not kBytes, even though it may show kB/sec. The B = bits and not Bytes. The transfer rate also includes compression of the files so maybe higher than your broadband upload speed.

The Uploaded file count can also be higher than the amount of files you have uploaded. This is because when uploading large files, extra checksum files and delta files are created, to be used for incremental backups. Incremental backups mean that we only upload the changes that have occurred to a file rather than the entire file again, speeding up the time it takes to do your next backup.

Restore

After an initial Backup you can view the files that have been saved to our PC Backup Server, by clicking the Restore button. Your files are dated so that older versions of files can be restored. You can restore your files to a location of your choosing.

PC backup restore

Click the Restore button.

Restore Window

This window shows you all the files that you have backed up and are held on our backup servers. Each time you backup files a date and time stamp is applied. This helps you to restore files that you have accidentally saved over. You can also click the Show all files button to see all the files that are held by us on our backup server.

You can restore files to their original location on your computer or you can save the files to a new or different folder or your desktop. Select the files you want to restore and click the Start Restore button. If your files were restricted to a specific user, you may need to check the Restore File Permissions box.

Encryption - Before your files are sent to the Offsite Backup Server, all your files are compressed and encrypted using encryption. Note: Encryption settings are set at the New Backup Set Wizard and cannot be modified. The default is to use the same encryption key as your PC Backup password.

Recycle Bin - During backup, if the software finds that you have deleted a file (or updated a file) on your computer, it will put the corresponding deleted (or updated) file already backed up on the backup server into a retention area. The Recycle Bin setting defines how long files inside the retention area will be kept on the backup server before they are deleted from the server. For those files that have not been changed on your computer, the backup of these files is kept in the data area on the backup server and won't be affected by the Recycle Bin setting.

Volume Shadow Copy - Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) allows you to backup files that are exclusively opened. Without VSS, doing a backup whilst you have open and changing files, you will get the error message "The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file".
Please note that VSS is only available on Windows XP / 2003 and you must have administrative privileges to start the VSS service on a computer. If you are having problems with VSS, simply uncheck this option, and the backup software will not try and backup open and changing files. You can backup your work at the end of the day when you log-off or shut-down your PC.

Enable System Logout Backup Reminder - this reminds you to do a backup when you log-off or shut-down. If you leave your PC on all the time, you could set-up a backup schedule for a specific time in the evening and turn-off this option. Please note that some computer applications can interfere with the locking workstation function and disable this feature from working correctly.

Enable Offline Backup - Offline backup is basically designed for users who are off-line most of the time and cannot rely on the backup schedule to backup regularly. The Backup Interval allows users to specify the interval that they would like their data to backup. When the machine is online and this interval has elapsed, backup will run automatically.
