Broadband migration advice - our guide to help you switch broadband provider
Does Direct Save Telecom support migrations to and from other broadband providers using MAC Codes?
Yes we do support migrations to and from other broadband providers using MAC codes.
What is a MAC code?
MAC stands for Migration Authorisation Code. It is issued by your broadband provider and is used to seamlessly switch from one provider to another without having to wait weeks to cease your line and re-register with another provider.
How do I switch to Direct Save Telecom from other service providers?
It's easy to switch to Direct Save Telecom.
Simply
:
1. Register as normal on this site.
2. Obtain your MAC Code from your current broadband provider. This is normally achieved by calling their cancellation line.
3. Shortly after registration we will email you asking you to email us the MAC code.
4. You will then receive a confirmation email with further detail as to when the switch will occur. The switch will usually occur within 7-10 days from the date that your telephone line transfers from your current telephone provider to Direct Save Telecom.
Do I cancel my account with my current broadband provider?
No! It is important you do not cancel your account with your existing broadband provider. If you do, you may be without broadband for several weeks while we provision your new line.
Can I switch from any Service Provider?
Most service providers participate in the migration scheme, including Direct Save Telecom. For an up to date list please visit: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/advice/codes/bbm_cop/#content
You will not be able to switch to Direct Save Telecom using a MAC code if your existing broadband is delivered via cable, such as a Telewest or NTL line. If you do wish to move from a cable provider to Direct Save Telecom you should cancel your cable service as normal and then register with Direct Save Telecom, we will install a new telephone line for you.
Will my MAC code expire?
Yes, MAC Codes do expire. You must use it 30 days from when it is issued or it will no longer be valid. If your MAC code does expire you will need to call your service provider and ask them to issue you a replacement.
How long does it take to migrate to Direct Save Telecom?
Firstly, your telephone line will transfer to Direct Save Telecom, this takes 14 days. Your broadband, in most instances, will be active on the same day. At a few exchanges the broadband is activated 7 to 10 days later.
Does it involve any downtime?
Migration on average has downtime of approximately 30 minutes, although it can vary.
Once the actual switch occurs, will I be able to connect straight away?
Yes you can connect immediately. On your modem you will need to change your username and password from your existing provider to your new Username and password that we provided. Although it may be possible to connect using your existing modem, we strongly recommend using the FREE hardware provided, especially if you require technical support.
My current service is 1Mb, when switching to Direct Save Telecom what speed can I get?
We will give you the highest speed possible up to 8Mb. Technical factors such as distance from your local exchange, broadband product or line quality can limit the maximum possible broadband speed you can receive.
